Thredbo, Australia’s premier year-round alpine destination, is renowned for its adrenaline-filled activities—from skiing and snowboarding in winter to mountain biking in summer.

With high-energy sports, safety is always a top priority. That’s why Thredbo partnered with Flip to add an extra layer of protection through Flip Group Active, giving participants peace of mind while they push their limits.

But how does this partnership work, and why has it become such a key value-add for Thredbo’s events? Let’s dive into the details.

Flip X Thredbo: partners in protection

The relationship between Flip and Thredbo kicked off in 2022 with Flip becoming an Official Resort Partner. Flip advertised its accidental injury cover product at the resort, to give adventure-seekers the option of taking an extra level of confidence onto the slopes. It soon became a staple feature in the resort’s overall safety strategy.

'We initially identified Flip’s products as a great fit to support the guest experience. Now, we’re including Group Active as a value-add for all participants in some of our events, and covering the cost from the event registration fees. It offers fantastic benefits for our participants.’ says Damian Goninan, Thredbo’s Events and Partnerships Manager.
Flip’s Partnership Manager Marlena Kamkolkar shares the same enthusiasm. 'We were excited to team up with an organisation like Thredbo because their values really aligned with ours. We knew we could enhance Thredbo’s guest experience by adding that extra layer of protection for high-risk activities. It’s really exciting to see how much the partnership has grown.'

How Flip Group Active works at Thredbo

From ski competitions to mountain biking sessions, Flip Group Active gives participants the confidence to fully engage in the thrills on offer. It’s simple, affordable, and designed for short-term, high-risk activities.

‘Safety is a key focus at Thredbo, but there are always risks when people push their limits. That’s where Flip comes in—offering peace of mind so participants can go all in.’ Damian explains.

What makes Flip Group Active stand out is its ease of use. When a participant needs to make a claim, they do it directly through Flip’s app. Thredbo doesn’t need to get involved in the claims process at all, which keeps everything seamless for event organisers.

Real-life protection: Eli’s story

Eli was a participant in the Battle on the Bluff event, a new freeride ski event on Thredbo’s most extreme terrain. ‘I didn’t expect to get injured,’ Eli says, ‘but I skied off a drop, landed wrong and felt a sharp pain in my leg. The bounce fractured both my tibia and fibula at the top of my ski boot.’

With injuries like this, the bills can rack up fast, but thankfully, Eli had cover under Thredbo’s Group Active policy. It could have cast a shadow over his entire experience, but Eli was quickly able to submit a claim through the Flip app.

‘Once I submitted the documents, it was all pretty straightforward. The payment came through fast, and I received $3,500 in total. It helped me with my out-of-pocket medical expenses and gave me a bit extra for other costs. It was great to have a little breathing room for the recovery time.’ Eli recalls.

Eli’s experience highlights the real value of having Flip coverage – it lets participants focus on getting better while minimising financial stress.

Thredbo’s take: Why Flip makes sense

For Thredbo, partnering with Flip is about improving the overall experience for participants. ‘Our events are all about pushing limits, whether it’s skiing extreme terrain or tackling summer mountain bike trails,’ Damian explains. ‘Having Flip Group Active means we can offer participants some peace of mind alongside the thrill of the event.’

The partnership has already had a noticeable impact.

‘We’ve seen year-on-year growth in event registrations, and the support from Flip has contributed to that. It’s great to know we’re giving our guests more confidence to participate.’ Damian adds.

Why Flip Group Active works for organisations like Thredbo

The simplicity and flexibility of Flip Group Active make it an ideal solution for organisations like Thredbo. ‘We love that it adds value for our guests without adding complexity for us,’ says Damian, ‘We don’t have to handle claims – Flip takes care of that – so we can stay focused on delivering great experiences. Accidents can happen and for those few occurrences, people really appreciate having that extra support. It makes a difference knowing they’re covered if something goes wrong.’

Looking ahead: Expanding the partnership

Both Flip and Thredbo are excited about the future of their partnership. ‘We’re looking forward to expanding Flip’s coverage across more events,’ says Marlena. ‘We want to encourage more people to enjoy the outdoors and take up new activities, knowing they’ve got that safety net in place.’

Damian agrees. ‘Flip has been an integral part of our events, and we’re excited to see where the partnership takes us – whether it’s the winter ski season or summer mountain biking, Flip Group Active will continue to offer that extra layer of protection.’
